Canada ski holiday facts

Immense mountains, stunning scenery, miles of deep powder and groomed trails combined with world class amenities all work together to bring you an unparalleled vacation experience when you travel to Canada to ski. Canada has ski areas in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec. Some areas are more well known than others to people who haven't skied in Canada before.

Fernie, British Columbia - Fernie is one of British Columbia's newest resort creations and offers some of Canada's most challenging skiing. Fernie is relatively uncrowded and has incredible snowfall and excellent skiing conditions for all levels of ability. The old town is a former mining community, with a great atmosphere, however a "ski in ski out" on-mountain resort has been created, with a good selection of bars and restaurants.

Whistler, BC - Whistler has shot up through the ranks to become one of the strongest contenders for the much disputed title of 'world's greatest ski resort.' Whistler's twin-pronged assault, involving both phenomonally good skiing (with one of the world's greatest high-speed lift systems) and a vast array of après-ski alternatives and comprehensive facilities, seems to beat just about all comers. In the '90's, Whistler has repeatedly been voted 'Best North American Ski Resort' by North Americans and in Japan it is consistently voted the favorite international destination for Japanese skiers. The many splendors of Whistler include access to the two mountains with North America's biggest skiable verticals, the biggest ski area on the continent and the most high-speed lifts on the planet. The snowfall averages over 400 inches (more than 10 metres) per year. Then there's the rapidly expanding base village, now spawning new resort villages as it moves past adolescence into adulthood. It's pedestrian only and filled with tempting cafés, international stores and around 100 restaurants including Chinese, French, Greek, Italian, Mediterranean, Mexican and Thai cuisine.

Kimberley, BC - Located in British Columbia, Kimberley is a small city nestled in the Purcell Mountains overlooking the majestic Rocky Mountains. The Kimberley Alpine Resort is a 4-season adventure destination. Kimberley is located next to backcountry recreation opportunities including hiking, mountain biking, ski touring, cross-country skiing, natural hot springs, camping, sightseeing and more.

Lake Louise, Alberta is Located in the heart of Canada's Banff National Park, Lake Louise ski area is widely regarded as one of the most scenic mountain resorts in North America, if not the entire world. Lake Louise is the largest ski area in Canada with 4,000 acres of skiable terrain. With four mountain faces to choose from, it takes most more than a week to explore all of Lake Louise.

The resort is divided into 25 percent beginner runs, 45 percent intermediate and 30 percent expert terrain. However there's a green run from every chair lift, making the mountain a good choice for families and groups of varying abilities.

Nakiska - Canada’s Olympic mountain is a legacy of excellence. Nakiska gives skiers and riders first rate facilities, both on-mountain and in adjacent Kananaskis village. State of the art snowmaking and grooming make Nakiska’s early season conditions among the most reliable anywhere. Home to the 1988 Winter Olympics, Nakiska features some of the best cruising and carving trails in the Rockies. Runs are wide open Olympic length and groomed to perfection. Located only an hour from Calgary, Nakiska is considered a favourite by local families.

Stoneham - With a stunning location, nestled in the heart of a valley sheltered from prevailing winds, Stoneham has one of Canada's best terrain parks, two halfpipes, an extreme boardercross course and a whole new "extreme zone". Located only 20 minutes from Quebec City, Stoneham is the perfect place to get out with friends, family, or your special someone!
